Dutch energy supplier Coolblue (also one of the country’s largest white goods/electronics retailers) is extending its ‘free washing’ programme to all Samsung washing machines.

Using the SmartThings API, device-level data is used to adjust the energy bill, meaning that running the machine between noon and 3 pm is free: no energy supply costs, no energy tax ☀️

Another example of how solar energy is fundamentally changing the European retail energy landscape, and how integrating devices into a supplier’s offering is gaining traction. Ensuring device access for energy readings and for setting and adjusting schedules and energy demand on behalf of and for the benefit of the user is a vital building block of the modern energy world.

Here, it’s a washing machine and a straightforward — and therefore probably highly effective — customer proposition. But imagine if the same approach was applied to hot water tanks, heat pumps and electric vehicles!

Contracts of this type, which offer lower prices for smartly managed devices, are emerging across Europe. See https://www.watture.eu/?portfolio=imagine-all-the-people
