Scale up of the public EV charging network

In order to improve local air quality, the City of Amsterdam launched the ‘Amsterdam electric’ campaign in 2009. Core part of this was the roll-out of a network of public charging stations, open for all to charge their electric vehicles. After the start of the initial pilot phase, Jaap Burger worked on further roll-out strategies and developed the functional and technical requirements for the procurement process of the next phase. Using the two suppliers selected, Amsterdam was able to scale up its charging network to 1000 charge points. This was done in a demand driven way, offering new EV drivers an easy process to get a public charger installed close to their home – as well as meeting the demands of new target groups, such as free floating car sharing.
